IE9 local files quirks mode

I used a local html file to play with media queries. It all worked fine on Safari and Firefox. According to Microsoft it should have worked on Internet Explorer 9 as well, but somehow it did not.

Then I noticed that it worked when I was viewing the very same file through a web address. To cut a long story short: IE9 shows local files in quirks mode by default.

To change that:

  • Press alt to bring up the menus
  • Goto Options
  • Select “Compatibility View Settings”
  • Uncheck “Display Intranet Sites in Compatibility View”

HTML/CSS list next to float element not displaying correctly

I have a floating div blog with an image and some text next to it. This text can contain a list. Together this is not displayed as expected neither in IE nor in FF. The list is not indented and the bullet points will be overlapping with the image.

The reason for this is that its not the whole list that is floating around the float element but only the list items.

The solution to float the whole list is to add some more style information to the list tag.

Example:

<div style=”width:283px; margin:7px 20px 20px 0px;float:left;”>
<img src=”test.jpg” width=”283″ height=”283″><div>Testbild.</div>
</div>
Ein Testtext, und noch einer
<ul style=”overflow:auto; padding-left:25px; margin-left:0px;”>
<li>Einrichtungskonzepte</li>
<li>Gestaltung & Planungg</li>
<li>Individuelle Fertigung</li>
</ul>
</div>

Setting constraints deferrable in PostgreSQL

I was going crazy trying to defer a simple constraint which was defined like this:

ON UPDATE CASCADE ON DELETE RESTRICT DEFERRABLE INITIALLY IMMEDIATE;

The DELETE RESTRICT part still caused a constraint violation even if all constraints were deferred at the beginning of the transaction, this seemed very illogical.

The answer to the problem lies in the fine print of the postgreSQL manual, it says:

Referential actions other than the NO ACTION check cannot be deferred, even if the constraint is declared deferrable.

For the RESTRICT CONSTRAINT it says:

… This is the same as NO ACTION except that the check is not deferrable.

So no wonder things didn’t work.

Just use  the NO ACTION constraint (which is the default setting) and you will be fine.

Hier steht warum: http://johannes-ruthenberg.de/windows-7-bitlocker-vs-truecrypt

Internet Explorer 7 shows no border when table cell is empty

I often have an HTML table with some empty cells. On IE7 there was no border around these cells. My workaround so far was to put an &nbsp; in these cells. There is an easier way though.

Just add the following css style to the table:

border-collapse: collapse;

Note:
According to SELFHTML the empty-cells property is not supported be IE, but anyway, we don’t need it here.
